TALENTED towpath angler Sue Jaques comfortably won Swan Angling Club’s penultimate canal contest at Whitford Bridge with a double-figure catch.

Drawn just above the cottages on peg three Jaques offered worm and caster bait across the canal to take skimmers up to 1lb throughout the match.

When the shoal finally left she changed to hemp seed to top up her net with small roach giving her a final winning total of 11lb 4oz 0dr.

The runner-up prize went to Paul Coley whose 7-0 catch came from the other end of the match length and also consisted of skimmers taken on bread punch.

Third place went to Rich Brewer who on peg two weighed in one big bream and a few hemp roach going 4-4-11 to beat fourth-placed Mick Samson’s 3-5-6 net.

The final Swan canal contest is on July 30 above Blackpole.

Dave Warren won the Whitehall club match on Brockamin top pool when he took 52-8 of carp from peg nine using paste bait offered at six metres.

In second place came Gary Watling who fished pellet and paste to the island on peg five and weighed 37-0.

Matt Barnes took third prize with a peg 26 catch of 36-12 and in fourth came Dean Grubb with 18-10.

Section winners were Mick Harris and Keith Holt.

Whitehall 1212 AC held their contest on Ockeridge Fisheries’ Oak pool where Dan Sydall again took the honours with 20-8 of feeder-caught carp.

Mike Hope came second with 17-12 consisting of three carp and a few silvers which fell for maggot bait shallow at five metres.

Third was John Shelton with a mainly silver fish catch of 14-0.

Section prizes went to Gareth Cook, Steve Thompson and Dave Mason.

The silver fish winner was Colin Hope.

After recent good catches the 28-peg Droitwich Spa club contest on the River Avon at Twyning proved a tough nut to crack for most.

The eventual winner from peg 49 next to the bridge was Reg Barnstable who made the peg come to life for the first time this season with a feeder-taken skimmer bream weight of 14-0.

Runner-up on peg 45 was club treasurer Dave Lowe who netted a bream first cast on the feeder and ended with 9-1.

Third place went to veteran Tony Hamilton with a big bream and a few silvers from peg 37 going 8-8 and in fourth came Nigel Davis with 7-8 from peg 43.

The members held a minute’s silence before the match in memory of club founder Dennis Spinner who passed away recently.

Spinner founded the club when they were Riflemans AC in 1986 and went on to become a life member as well as their president.

The previous Wednesday contest on the venue saw better catches with Rich Brewer coming out on top from rarely-used peg 31 in the boat meadow with an all feeder-caught bream weight of 38-12.

Alf Hand also took bream from peg 19 for a second-placed 24-14 and third was Gary Summers on peg 47 who used a feeder for 12-8 to beat Nigel Davis’ 11-7.
