TENNIS players from across the country battled it out for honours at the Bottle Green Malvern Open.

The grade-three ranking tournament attracted 419 entries for age groups ranging from under eights to men’s and ladies.

More than 400 matches were played across 16 courts at the Manor Park Club and Malvern St James between Sunday, July 23 and Saturday, July 29.

Finals day saw Jack Smith, of Redditch Tennis Club, lose out in the semi-final of the men’s singles event to eventual winner Freddie Davies, of Kenilworth, while Sam Clements, of Manor Park, lost to Samuel Sitch, of David Lloyd Cranmore, in the final of the 10U boys’ singles.

In the 9U event, Alfie Mills, of Pershore, finished third from an entry field of 24 players, with Zach Burgess, of Manor Park, finishing as runner up in the 8U. Liz and Katy Lewin, of Ledbury, teamed up to come third in the ladies doubles with Katherine Panton-Kent and Nicole Lewis of David Lloyd Worcester, finishing fourth.

Bradley Smith and Sean Randle, of Pershore, and club mates Samuel Rayner and Max Hingley had to settle for third place in the 18U and 14U boys’ events respectively.

The 10U event saw Manor Park’s Sam Clements and Redditch’s Caleb Ravenscroft finish runners up.

Tournament referee Ed Bradford said: “The Malvern Open once again proved to be a highly competitive tournament, attracting a number of highly ranked players from across the country. “Matches were fiercely competitive but all were played in the right spirit.

“We wish all players well and we look forward to welcoming them back in 2018.”
