DENNIS Morse and Mick Huggins won club championship titles at Worcester’s Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park Golf Club.

Another fine round of 78 gross by Morse again earned him the veterans’ crown in the scratch competition.

Morse, who usually plays off 14 which has been reduced to 13, carded nine pars and just bogies elsewhere to win by five shots.

He has won the competition every time since it was started three years ago.

Many of the 47 entrants struggled for form but John Wilkinson (14 handicap) came in with 83 to take second.

Brian Price (11) was third with 84 but countback was required before the place was awarded and Jan Schutte (17) finished fourth.

The seniors’ championship was also off scratch and Huggins returned the lowest gross score of 80 to take the title.

He carded birdies on the second and 18th holes to go with his modest tally of three pars and various bogies to finish four shots clear.

Huggins’ handicap was reduced from 17 to 16.

Ed Nicklin (13) took second with 84 and Peter Brown (15) grabbed third with 85 while Robert Griffiths (20) was fourth with 88.

Geoff Jones (20 handicap) won the club’s President’s Trophy after topping round six with 65 nett.

In damp, breezy conditions eight pars helped Jones but three triple bogies almost denied him.

Nicklin was second after handing in 67 with Morse third on 68 and Paul Field (13) just missing out on countback.

Thirty played with just six recording nett par or better for the course.

Jones won the overall trophy with 263 points from his best four rounds with Mike Williams second on 266, Huggins third on 267 and Morse fourth on 270.

Jamie Newton (13) coped best with rain showers and thunderstorms to claim the Vice President’s Cup with 62 nett.

Birdies on the fifth and 11th holes combined with 10 pars and just one double bogey took Newton to the top.

Second on countback was Scott Thomas with 63 ahead of Robert Brookes (10) while Adrian Day (8) was fourth on 65.

Newton, Thomas and Brookes had handicap cuts to 12, 13 and nine respectively.  Twenty-two finished on nett par or better for the course.
