A WORCESTER drag racing duo are leading the National Championships and Santa Pod Championships in their class.

Brian Huxley, 75, and Lee Huxley, 48, form the Dark Horse team and will be competing in the finals of both championships later this year.

The pair will race alongside 53 others in Hockenheim, Germany, on Sunday and Monday as part of the NitrOlympX event.

It will be the biggest race the Worcester team have competed in.

They will be in their 1968 Ford Mustang fibreglass replica powered by an eight-and-a-half-litre Big Block Ford V8.

The car does 0-60mph in around three seconds and has run a best of 147mph in 8.92 seconds over a quarter-mile.

Updates to the Mustang this season include a full rewire, new rear slicks and an overhaul of the two-speed Powerglide gearbox.

The pair will compete in the fifth round of the National Drag Race Championship at Shakespeare County Raceway near Stratford from Saturday, August 26, until Monday, August 28.

The final for the national league is at Santa Pod Raceway, Bedfordshire, on September 23 and 24.

Dark Horse lead the competition by 290 points which puts them in a strong position going into the final.

The pro-et class final of the Santa Pod Championships is from September 7 until 10 and the pair also top the table by 230 points.

Dark Horse won both championships in their class in 2015 and 2016 and claimed victory in the UK top sportsman event at the Mopar Euronationals at Santa Pod.

Brian Huxley said: “Our wins over the last two years are all down to great teamwork with a great crew chief (Andy Walker) and Tim Hines from Broadway looking after the engine."

Lee Huxley added: "We are very grateful to our loyal sponsors supporting us again in 2017."

Meanwhile another member of the family Marc Huxley, 31, has also been doing well in motorsport.

He finished second in the British Drift Championship in 2016 in his Huxley Motorsport 1977 Toyota Celica.
