WORCESTER swimmers enjoyed success at the English and Welsh Home Nations Summer Championships.

Following the British competition for the top 24 in each event the next best ranked 20 swimmers tested themselves on the national scene.

Stars for Worcester in Sheffield were debutants Megan Annis and Daniel Day.

Annis qualified in two sprint events in the girls’ 14 year age group for the 50-metre backstroke and 50m butterfly.

She did a 1.1-second personal best of 31.47 in the backstroke heats to qualify first for the final having been seeded 18th.

Annis could not quite replicate her heat swim with 31.61 for sixth in a tight finish just 0.16 outside the medals.

She again smashed her entry time in the 50m butterfly heats with 29.60.

Annis shaved more time off in the final for 29.58 to grab a bronze medal just 0.01 away from silver and only 0.14 ahead of fourth.

Team-mate Charlotte Hall just missed out on a medal in the 16 years 50m butterfly.

She swam well, especially in the final where her 29.26 was a PB, but finished fourth in a close finish with just 0.24 covering six swimmers.

Another first-timer Day was in scintillating form in the boys’ 13 to 14 age group.

He made the final in three backstroke events and picked up two bronze medals.

Day recorded PBs in the heats and finals of the 50m backstroke (30.29/30.10) to finish sixth.

In the 100m he dropped his PB from one minute 5.35 seconds to 1.03.98 and then found extra again in the final with 1.03.47 for bronze.

He set a PB of 2.21.11 in the 200m heats and smashed that with 2.18.15 in the final for a second third place.

Harvey Lloyd, also in a national event for the first time, and Sam Hall tackled the 100m breaststroke.

Sam Hall’s 1.09.60 could not match his PB as he narrowly missed out on a 17 year final place.

But Lloyd dropped from his entry time of 1.11.39 to 1.10.67 in the heats to go into the 16 year final ranked ninth.

A swim of 1.10.65 saw him move up to seventh despite not even qualifying for the county championships two years ago.

British Championship competitors Will Gearey, Matthew Redfern and Olivia Fletcher also headed to the home nations event.

After winning bronze at the British event Gearey did solid swims in the 13 to 14 year 200m individual medley and the 100m and 200m backstroke to go close to finals in all three.

In the multi-classification events as a S13 visually impaired swimmer Redfern won a 200m individual medley bronze.

His heat time of 2.31.21 was way off his PB but in the final he improved to 2.26.92 to win the race and get third on multi-classification points.

Fletcher swam the 50m freestyle at the Welsh Home Nations and did a PB of 27.66 to win gold.
