MIKE Williams and Barry Monk won the Bill Moore seniors pairs matchplay final at Worcester's Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park.

They defeated Geoff Jones and Joe Jackson one-up after starting the contest in persistent rain.

The pairings halved 13 holes in total but Jones and Jackson were first to break the stalemate by winning the second and fifth holes to be two-up at the turn.

Williams and Monk won the 11th, 15th and 16th before holding off their rivals to take the honours.

They beat Geoff Edge and Norman Vernalls 2&1 and Tim Delaney and Ed Nicklin one-up earlier in the competition.

Jones and Jackson defeated Trevor Ditchfield and George Postans two-up and Malcolm Stanley and Mick Huggins 4&3.

Williams (20 handicap) also won the Turner Shield with a fine score of 62 nett.

Sam Candlin (22) was second on 63 followed by Mark Purser (9) in third on countback from Andy Turner (21) with both on 66.

Forty-three players contested the event with just 13 managing to match or better nett par for the course.

Williams earned a handicap reduction down to 18 after his victorious round which saw him sink eight pars in total.

Three double bogies could have cost him dearly but his handicap came in handy and took him to the head of he field to win by a single shot.

Candlin's handicap dropped to 21 while Purser's went down to eight.

Williams also claimed a 666 Stableford Team Challenge with Tony Solomon, Duane Parsons and Dennis Morse.

Val Williams, Andy Wood, Vernalls and Phil Lane finished second.

Teams of four built up stableford points by adding the best two individual scores on holes one to six, the best three on six to 12 and all four on 13 to 18.

Lane won the Sunday medal eclectic sixth round of 11 with 63 nett as his handicap was reduced from 15 to 14.

Jamie Newton (13) was second on 67, Roger Jones (14) third on 68 and Steve Williams (5) fourth on 69 on countback from Stephen Griffiths.

Lane dropped in birdies on two and 18 to strengthen his haul of six pars and only really slipped up once with a double bogey on the 15th.

With just bogies for the rest of his round and his handicap shots still available Lane got to the head of the pack by four shots.

A damp morning greeted the players with just 16 taking part.

Jeff Ingleston (21) topped the seniors stableford with 45 points ahead of Tim Delaney (20) on 41, Barry Sandel (28) on 40 and Brian Price (12) on 39.

With the early morning weather throwing just about everything at the course 32 braved the miserable conditions.

Relatively new member Ingleston birdied the ninth and 15th alongside seven pars in his round.
