WORCESTER Hockey Club members are celebrating after international success, demonstrating the sport is a game for all ages.

Junior academy player Imogen Gilgrass has been selected for England girls' under 16s following her gold medal-winning performances for Mercia Lynx in the Futures Cup.

Veteran Vince Smith also won gold at the World Grand Masters Tournament in Glasgow, representing England LX in the men's over 70s.

Worcester chairman George Chakko-George said: "The whole club are incredibly proud of these two players.

"Worcester's junior academy produces some fantastic junior players who have represented Worcestershire, Mercia Lynx and national teams.

"Vince is an inspiration to all our members, proving that age is merely a number where hockey is concerned."

Junior section co-ordinator Mary Travers said of Gilgrass: "Imogen’s dedication to the game has been outstanding from a very young age and she is a great role model for the younger players."

More success for Worcester saw the girls' under 12s voted junior team of the year at the City of Worcester Sport Awards.

They won the Midlands In2Hockey competition in their age group, beating Stourport and Beeston in the process, before being crowned runners-up in the national finals.

Travers added: "In doing so, the team more than competed with teams from national league clubs with much greater resources.

"The team’s success was down to an exceptional commitment to training and the dedication and expertise of the club’s junior coaching."

Worcester's junior academy began earlier this month on Sundays at Nunnery Wood Sports Complex and they welcome new members.
