THE annual challenge grudge match at Bransford resulted in a clear 83-61 win for the seniors over the ladies to avenge last year’s defeat.

The event, also held to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Care, saw the best turnout yet with 32 taking part in a pairs match-play format with a point on offer from each of the 18 holes.

The two captains Pauline Wetton (27/30) and Alan Wallcroft (23) led the way off with their respective playing partners Anne Hayden (22/25) and Keith Edgell (19) which the senior men won convincingly 14-4.

They went on to win all the matches bar one where June Atkinson (19/22) and Cynthia Holmes (33/36) gelled together perfectly to narrowly see off 17-handicappers Dave Miller and Dave Parry 9½-8½.

Trevor Atkinson (14) and Dick Bettsworth (25) beat Diane Leadbetter (23/26) and Trish Godwin (25/28) 10-8, Harry Godwin (20) and Rob Wetton (24) beat Pam McBride (30/33) and Coral Handley (24/27) 11-7, Keith Leadbetter (12) and Neil Sheldon (21) beat Eve Lynes (26/29) and Mary Starkey (28/31) 10½-7½, Rob Blake (15) and Graham Wilks (18) beat Jane Smallwood (26/29) and Nicola Tanfield 10-8, Ferey Ghani (14) and Paul Edlin (24) beat Leigh Thomas (18/21) and Abi Nixon (29/32) 9½-8½ and John Tanfield (17) and John Phillips (19) beat Jenny Bishop (18/21) and Sally McPherson (26/29) 9½-8½.

Cake donations raised £250 for the charity.

Bransford seniors are on a six-match unbeaten run.

Following home wins over Wharton Park, Evesham and Puckrup Hall along with a draw at Brickhampton, they won 4-2 at Leominster and 6-0 at home to Kington.

Against Leominster, Wallcroft and Ghani lost one-down, Atkinson and Mike Weaver (20) won 3&2, Miller and Lee Dyment (19) won 5&4, Mike Davidge (16) and Phillips won 2&1, Wilks and Roger Clark (23) lost one-down and Blake and Edlin won 4&3.

Against Kington, Wallcroft and Davidge won 4&3, Miller and Dave Lindsay (20) 8&6, Atkinson and Roy Williams (21) 5&4, Phillips and Mike Holmes (28) 4&3, Blake and Andy Falconer (26) 6&5 and Ghani and Charlie Hawkridge (24) 4&3.

Bransford ladies held their club championship and Jenny Bennett emerged successful with the day’s lowest gross score of 92 to win by two shots from Lesley Lammas while June Atkinson was third on 97.

The Handicap Trophy went to Nicola Tanfield with a nett score of 75 (101 gross 26 handicap).

Club captain Pete Sheppard acted as starter and also presented the prizes to the winners.
