WORCESTER City has banned an unnamed supporter for the rest of this season after an altercation during yesterday’s match at Shawbury United.

Following a verbal exchange, a male supporter moved down from the public viewing balcony at the Ludlow Football Stadium and grabbed a fellow City fan by the face.

A steward, a Shawbury United official and City skipper Brad Birch swiftly stepped in to prevent the situation escalating.

In the immediate aftermath, chairman Anthony Hampson vowed the club would investigate the incident, stating the supporter who had instigated the physical confrontation was known to City and that his actions had been “totally uncalled for”.

An announcement on the club’s official website today confirmed the fan had been banned with secretary Kevin Preece informing the Worcester News that it would remain in place for the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign.

In a post on the club’s official Facebook page, City stated the decision had been reached after gathering “around 20 witness statements from Shawbury officials, staff, WCFC players and supporters” but that any further evidence would be welcomed.

Preece said City would pass relevant details to opponents ahead of away matches this season but that any decision over who to admit would be down to the host club.

The club has not referred the matter to police.
