FOUR members of Whitehall Angling Club travelled to Canada to fish the mighty Fraser River in the Cascade mountains above Vancouver.

They were rewarded with some fantastic catches of great white sturgeon.

Over six days of fishing, Steve Thompson, Dave Warren, Trevor Davis and Mick Watling, guided by Cascade Fishing Adventures, returned 38 fish including 11 over 7ft long.

The biggest fish of 8ft 8ins weighed around 370lb and fell to the rod of catfish expert Watling with Thompson taking the second biggest of 325lb which broke his rod during the fight.

All the fish were caught on salmon bait presented on stout tackle and barbless hooks and returned back to the river.

A low, clear River Avon at Twyning was once again in a difficult mood for 23 members of Droitwich Spa AC.

But it did not stop club star Chris Ballard taking the top spot with 5lb 14oz 0dr of small roach and perch from peg 24 for another victory.

On adjacent peg 23 was runner-up Gerry Bartlett who caught a similar net to the winner going 3-11 to narrowly beat veteran Dennis Evans’ peg 27 weight of 3-1-4.

Section winners were Harry Harrison, John Swain, Tony Hamilton and Mick Watson.
