THE Royal Grammar School Worcester's girls reached the semi-finals of a national indoor hockey competition.
They impressed in the Super 6s Under 16s School Championships at Bromsgrove School.
RGS bagged more goals than any other team and captain Sophie Thompson was top scorer at the tournament.
They had won the county competition before finishing regional runners-up to secure their national place.
Against Blundell’s School from Tiverton in the pool opener, Thompson and Lottie Atkinson scored hat-tricks along with Lucy Hawkes adding two to win 8-2.
A 5-4 victory over St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, was followed by a nail-biting 3-3 draw against St George’s.
RGS led the pool and moved into the semi-finals with a game in hand.
A tense encounter with Wellington College remained 0-0 at half-time but the opposition went a goal up early in the second period.
Even with numerous shots and moving to six outfield players, RGS lost 1-0 to the eventual champions.
The Worcester team are coached by head of hockey Leanne Bennett and former Great Britain Olympic medallist Sally Walton.
Bennett said: "I am very proud of the hard work the girls have put in leading up to this tournament and the professional approach they had throughout the national finals.
"They are a very talented age group and a pleasure to coach."
