WORCESTER Warriors boss Alan Solomons is remaining coy over the possibility of making a bid for England flanker James Haskell.

But he insists Warriors are “pretty well covered” at loose forward after Alafoti Fa’osiliva became the latest back rower to agree a new deal at Sixways.

According to The Rugby Paper, Warriors are weighing up whether to make a play on Haskell when he leaves Wasps at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has expressed his desire to stay in the Aviva Premiership in a bid to keep his hopes of securing a place in England’s squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup alive.

Leicester Tigers, Northampton Saints and Bristol have also been rumoured to be looking at signing the experienced forward.

With Haskell believed to be earning about £350,000 a year, any deal is likely to come down to money and whether Warriors would be willing to offer him a contract longer than a year.

But with time running out as clubs begin to put the final touches to their squads for next season, Northamptonshire-based Haskell is understood to be prepared to take a cut in his salary to remain in England.

Although Warriors will be losing David Denton, who has agreed to join Leicester in the summer, they have snapped up Cornell du Preez from Edinburgh.

They have also retained the signatures of Sam Lewis, Marco Mama and Fa’osiliva.

“At the moment if you look at our squad we have still got Carl Kirwan, Matt Cox and GJ van Velze under contract,” Solomons said.

“Cornell is coming into the mix and Sammy and Marco have extended so we are pretty well covered at loose forward.”

But when asked whether he could rule out an approach for Haskell Solomons replied: “When we have got an announcement we will certainly make it.

“The way we work is that when we have got something concrete then we will announce it but what I am saying to you is we have got good strength in depth in our loose forwards.

“We have got a nice balance as I am seeing Ted Hill and Tom Dodd as very much part of that mix and Foti has just extended as well so you are dealing with nine loose forwards.”

Solomons was keen to acknowledge the “positive contributions” Haskell has made to teams during his playing career.

Haskell made his Wasps debut in 2002 before leaving in 2009 for spells in France, Japan and New Zealand only to return to Dai Young's side in 2013.

He has also won 75 England caps and was part of British and Irish Lions’ squad last summer.

“James is a very good player, there is no question about that,” Solomons said.

“He would not be in England’s 25-man squad for the Scotland Test if he wasn’t.

“He’s a very experienced player and wherever he has been he has made good, positive contributions, whether that’s in Super Rugby for the Highlanders or playing for Wasps, England or the Lions.

“England have a really good chance of being successful in the Rugby World Cup and he wants to be a part of that. I fully understand that.”
