KING'S School Worcester retained the Challenge Cup with a 2-2 draw against Royal Grammar School Worcester thanks to a late equaliser.

Just over 1,000 hardy souls at Sixways saw King’s off to a flier courtesy of a defensive mix-up which allowed Sam Lowe to shoot low into the net from close range.

Both sides attempted to impose themselves by relying on the passing game which had served them well before.

But on a big pitch and with a surface perhaps best suited to rugby continuity proved difficult and both sides experienced tricky moments in defence.

Just when it seemed King’s would go in at half-time with a slender advantage RGS struck.

Breaking from the back with speed, a speculative cross from the right was missed by all the defenders before being expertly dispatched at the far post by skipper Max Hawkesworth.

The second half saw RGS begin brightly and after just a couple of minutes a defensive mix-up presented Will Saunders with an opportunity which he gleefully accepted.

Play switched from end-to-end and substitutes were used as King’s came more into the game.

A change in formation and the introduction of Finlay Chance proved the turning point.

With the clock winding down, a pinpoint cross from Jimmie Poole was met with a fine header from Chance.

Despite RGS keeper Joe Thompson pulling off a fine save, Chance was the quickest to react and dispatched the rebound into the bottom corner.

King’s players celebrated most as for the second year running a goal in the final minutes was enough to decide the residence of the cup for another year.
