MORE than 130 athletes tackled Worcester Triathlon Club's second race of the season at the University of Worcester's Lakeside Campus.

Competitors had the option of two distances but the majority opted for the longer challenge.

The male and female winners of the double distance race were Dan Blake in two hours, 36 minutes and eight seconds and Mel Clarke in 3.20.51 respectively.

The duo completed a 1,500-metre open-water swim, a 60-kilometre bike section and a 10km run.

Guy Anderson, 17, (1.25.40) who still races in the junior category and Rebecca Hayward (1.38.31) were the sprint winners over a 750m open-water swim, 30km bike and 5km run.

Racing started at 7.45am in perfect conditions. Following the swim, athletes quickly transitioned to their bikes to tackle the undulating bike course on fantastic scenic roads through Great Witley, Martley, Broadheath & Hallow with a fairly stiff climb on each lap.

The run consisted of a flat 2.5km lap, off-road and within the confines of the university campus as the temperatures rose during the morning.

Worcester have one more race this season with the Droitwich Triathlon on July 22 which includes a 400m pool swim, 20km bike section and 5km run.

The club also holds open-water swimming sessions every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer at Upton Warren, plus a year-round combination of pool swimming, cycling, running and strength training.
