FATHER and son Robert and James Ganderton were the heroes for Martley who enjoyed a double dose of success.

A fine opening partnership between James Ganderton and Richard Birchley saw Martley’s first team take the score to 131-0 against Worcestershire League Division Three leaders Rushwick.

Martley had a slight collapse, losing four wickets, but Ganderton held tight as he cruised to his century before falling for 119.

Dan Johnson then bashed three big sixes on his way to 60 not out as Martley’s innings ended on 319-8.

Mark Johnson and brother Dan strangled the openers as the visitors faced a daunting task at 30-2 from 11 overs.

Ganderton then nipped through the middle over, taking 4-59, and Rushwick looked doomed at 188-9.

Liam Probert (52 not out) and Clive Jones (24) rallied, but with the last ball of the penultimate over Simon van Tongeren bowled Jones to give Martley victory by 74 runs.

Martley’s seconds also celebrated their first win of the season, beating Tenbury by four wickets at Penlu.

A stubborn fifth wicket stand of 80 put the hosts in the driving seat, but better fielding and tighter bowling from Robert Ganderton (3-20) restricted them to 221-9.

Martley’s reply got off to a steady start before Martin Sweet cracked a rapid 30. After two quick wickets, Ganderton joined Basford in the middle and the veteran duo set about the home attack.

Basford’ was stumped for 87, but Tom Butler (16 not out) and Ganderton took their side to the brink of victory.

Ganderton was forced to retire on 38 after suffering a blow to his cheekbone but Martley knocked off the remaining two runs to clinch the win.
