SEVERN Stars head coach Sam Bird believes the Worcester team’s performances towards the end of the season will set their intentions and ambitions for the next one.

She said Star's remaining games were a chance to demonstrate they can improve on their placing in the Netball Superleague with the aim of maintaining the same attitude and intensity as the season draws to a close.

Symbolic of that intent, the team were straight back to training the next day following their 55-36 win over UWS Sirens on Monday night as they prepare to face Team Northumbria today (6pm) in the second of three home matches at the University of Worcester Arena.

“It’s another chance to take a step towards securing sixth place and it’s important for qualifying for the Fast5 competition,” said Bird.

“And it’s important for us as a club to show that we really can be higher than this next year and we have a right to be ambitious.”

Stars emerged victorious in a dominant home performance against Sirens to the delight of the arena crowd in the first of three home games to round off the season.

“We’ve trained twice again this week so there’s no taking the foot off the pedal,” said Bird.

“We’ve done our analysis and we’re pushing on for Saturday.

“Northumbria had a really tight game with Storm where they only lost by one so we’re not taking anything for granted.

"They certainly have it in them to pull out a strong performance.

“Northumbria have a range of exciting and varied shooting options in their squad.

"It will be a good test for our defending unit to show their ability to perform against that variety and carry on with the strong defending we have shown over the season.”

As to whether she would be using the last few games to change things up in her player line-up, Bird said at all stages of the season there was a balance to be struck in team selection between experience and giving up-and-coming talent a chance.

“I very much believe the seven that are taking those places and demanding those places should play because this is elite netball and performance netball,” she said.

“But it’s important to give the rest of the squad opportunities to play, see what it feels like and go out and do a good job like they did against Sirens.”
