GEORGE Forsyth has batted back manager John Snape’s challenge to “nail down one position” having agreed to stay at Worcester City.

The 21-year old initially arrived on loan in August and joined permanently after the mutual termination of his Gloucester City contract, making 36 appearances across his two spells.

He was asked to fill a variety of defensive positions as well as his preferred central-midfield role but still mustered five goals, including the decider when City won 1-0 at promotion rivals Coleshill Town.

That consistency earned Forsyth the coveted Worcester News Player of the Season gong and pushed him towards the top of Snape’s summer list of targets but now the ex-Wolves youngster wants to make his mark in a specific role.

“I am not fussed whether it is centre-half or central midfield but I would prefer to play one and stick to it,” said Forsyth.

“The gaffer said I needed to nail down a position. To be fair, I need him to put me in one for that to happen because I think I have performed wherever he has asked me to play.

“He is the manager, he pays me and I trust him. I will always play any position he asks me to and give my best but personally, I do want to have a good run at a central position to try to show my best.

“I thought I was unlucky not to stay in central midfield at times last season. I scored four goals in 10 games at one point, which was a good return.

“I enjoyed it at centre-half too, we got some clean sheets through good partnerships with either Stodds or Smudge (Jordan Stoddart or Mark Smith).”

Four weeks have passed since the City boss said “financial issues” had delayed the deal but Forsyth insisted football matters had ruled his decision.

“We met up twice and it was always my intention to stay unless there was something too good to turn down from elsewhere,” he added.

“My head was never turned. The interest and enjoyment I got from playing a part every week, I loved that. It was class.

“I wanted to make sure I would be playing if I moved on and I didn’t get that feeling from the offers I had.

“You are never guaranteed a place but I feel good at Worcester, I am happy playing for Snapper (Snape) and just want to build on last season and win the league.

“It was never about money, more that I had other offers to consider at the time. I could understand Snapper being a bit impatient, he wanted an early decision because he has a season to plan for.

“I went on holiday and then gave him my decision when I got back. It was more to do with game time, making sure I cross that white line every Saturday and enjoy my football.

“Eventually I want to make the step up and hope to do that with Worcester. I am looking forward to getting stuck in.”
