DEPARTING Worcester Wolves boss Paul James insisted he had not held talks with Plymouth Raiders over their head coach vacancy.

James has been linked with a switch to Wolves’ British Basketball League rivals after Gavin Love stepped down as Raiders’ chief last month.

But James who will leave Worcester tomorrow calmed rumours over a possible move and stated he was in “no hurry” to make a decision on his future.

“At this point I have not had any conversations with Plymouth,” James said.

“I know they had interviews a while back, but no (I have not spoken to them).”

The vastly-experienced James said he would only join a club if they were in a “very stable” position as he looks for another long spell in a prominent coaching role.

“I am looking at two or three different options and I am in no hurry to make any decision,” James said.

“Whatever the situation is it has got to be right for my family.

“If that’s the case I will look at signing somewhere else.”

Asked whether he would consider a move overseas, James added: “It is down to the situation.

“It has got to be a very stable place where there is longevity and a good environment for my family to grow up in.”

James was head coach of Bracknell Tigers and Guildford Heat before taking over the reins at Wolves in December 2009.

During his time in the hot seat he won the BBL Trophy and BBL play-offs in 2014 and finished in the top four in five of the past seven seasons.

“If you look at my CV I am a person that wants to be at a club for a while because you can’t do anything successfully in one or two years,” James said.

“I always thought (I would be at Worcester for) three years, five years at most, so to have been here for nine years shows my loyalty towards the club and the feelings I have towards the supporters.

“I am proud of what I have achieved at Wolves and if I chose to coach somewhere else hopefully I can do that at another club.”

Wolves are now looking to appoint a new head coach and James said he was confident the club would remain successful.

“They are in a better place now than when I first started,” James said.

“They have got probably the best facility in the country and have got all of the resources to be a very successful team so I am sure they will continue to go from strength to strength.”

James had been looking to retain several of last season’s squad but he did not believe his departure would stop negotiations.

“Talks started in February so whoever takes over will continue those,” James added.

“I don’t know what they plan to do but I am sure there will be things going on behind the scenes to get moving very quickly.”
