EX-West Bromwich Albion youngster Rees Wedderburn will be “ready for war” in Worcester City colours if signed following his trial spell.

The 22-year-old winger left the Baggies in the summer of 2015 and played for two years in America with Indiana Hoosiers.

Having returned to the UK he briefly turned out for City’s Midland Football League Premier Division rivals AFC Wulfrunians last season, making seven starts and four substitute appearances.

From there he focused on his work as a development executive in the construction sector and as much as Worcester’s call this summer was a bolt from the blue, it was also welcome.

“To be honest I never really thought about getting back into football but Worcester got in touch and I felt it would be a good side to play for,” said Wedderburn.

“I had a great time over in America and when I came back, I focused on business.

“I work in property development behind the scenes. It is good, a real passion of mine but so is football which is why I feel it is the right time for me to come back.

“It was about finding the right team. Worcester have a good attacking, footballing side and that’s what I’d rather be a part of instead of a dogfight at the bottom.

"I am ready for war. You always want to aim for the top and if Worcester take me on I would like to win the league and see where we go from there.

“Hopefully they will take me on. I have had one or two offers from elsewhere but they’re not for me at the moment.

“I would not say I am happy with my performances, I don’t feel like I have done a lot yet but it has been a long time since I played.

“I am just getting my fitness back up to scratch and then hopefully Worcester will see the best of me.”

Wedderburn played the first 71 minutes as a mix-and-match City side left it late to secure a 2-1 friendly win at Bewdley Town.

It was an open and at times frenetic match with Bewdley taking the lead on 69 minutes when a short City corner fell apart at the seams.

The hosts broke quickly and from the free-kick that followed, Simon Rudds crashed in at the near post.

Substitutes James Baldwin and Kyonn Evans added impetus down the wings and the leveller eventually arrived.

Full-back Joel Caines hit the final third and while Dave Reynolds saw his first effort repelled, he bundled in after uncertain goalkeeping from Joe Siddaway with two minutes to go.

And in added time the comeback was complete when keeper Matt Gwynne's punt forward was cleverly flicked over the advancing Siddaway by Reynolds.

Trialist Luke English, usually a full-back, completed 90 minutes at centre-half, while ex-City keeper Matt Sargeant turned out in goal.

It is understood Sargeant is still hoping to secure a deal with Southern League Premier Division Central outfit Alvechurch.

City: Sargeant (Gwynne, 63), Caines, Smith, English, Yeomans, Forsyth (Moran, 71), Wedderburn (Evans, 71), Lockett, Willis, Reynolds, Bates (Baldwin, 63). Unused sub: Stoddart.
