CHAIRMAN Anthony Hampson is understood to be on the verge of quitting Worcester City and could be gone within the next 24 hours.

The embattled City chief is set to meet with four prospective new directors to finalise a handover tonight, at least one of which is said to be a prominent figure from Worcester City Supporters’ Trust.

Director Mark Wilcox stood down from his role last week citing family and work commitments, leaving Hampson, vice-chairman Colin Layland and long-standing sponsor Martin Pinches as the homeless club's three remaining directors.

There was another blow to City's hopes of returning home on Monday when Worcester City Council's Policy and Resources Committee unanimously backed the recommendations of a report which called for a halt to publicly-funded feasibility studies at the proposed stadium site at Parsonage Way.

The club’s constitution states “the number of directors shall not be less than five” with City running with fewer since football secretary Kevin Preece left from the board in March.

Layland, the only director present at last night's pre-season match at home to Stourbridge, politely declined to comment on whether there would be any outgoings but did confirm plans had been put in place to boost the numbers on City’s board.

“There are very strong plans to take it forward,” said Layland.

“There will be new members on the board. I would go as far as (to say) in the very near future, possibly this week.

“I cannot divulge anything else at the moment. We have meetings and people will be coming on board.”

Hampson declined to comment.
