A LATE goal from Chris Cornes secured Worcester Raiders a 2-1 victory over Wellington Amateurs at Claines Lane.

Matt Andrews put Raiders on course for their first West Midland League Division One win of the season when he struck midway through the first half.

The hosts who featured new signings Jamie Heason and Tyler Attwood were guilty of switching off after the break as Amateurs levelled matters.

But Raiders responded and Cornes netted the winner with 10 minutes left when he found the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

The visitors almost scored a last-gasp equaliser from a corner but goalkeeper Dan Stephens pulled off a fine save to ensure a maximum-point success for the city side.

Manager Karl Gormley said: “It was a cracking result.

“We had a goal scored against us in the 90th minute last week so it was nice for us to get the winner this time.

“But we were definitely the better side.”

Gormley has taken sole charge of Raiders following Martin Stephens' departure with Cornes appointed player-assistant boss.

"Martin is working a lot of Saturdays now so he couldn't fully commit," Gormley added.

"He left on good terms and we are still good friends."

Droitwich Spa got their campaign off to the perfect start as they ran out 4-0 winners at Sikh Hunters.

Skipper Mike Seeley opened the scoring on four minutes before James Lemon bagged a second-half brace and Haydn Morris grabbed the other late on.

In the Premier Division, Pershore Town drew 1-1 with Dudley Town at the Community Stadium with captain David Wilson scoring for the home side.
