WORCESTER City’s new directors have been assigned specific roles in a bid to stop “one person trying to do everything” at the club.

Simon Gregory, Dave Wood and Tom Swan were each handed different responsibilities in Steve Goode’s first board meeting as chairman this week.

Gregory will be director of finance and merchandise and Goode said he would be delving into the club’s accounts in preparation for their AGM.

Swan has become director of football which will see him deal with any issues from first team through to the youth set-up while Wood will look to organise events to bring in funds as director of business development.

Goode also confirmed Colin Layland would carry on as vice chairman with fellow long-standing director Martin Pinches continuing to be the club’s main sponsor.

“It won’t be one person trying to do everything,” Goode said. “If one person tries to do everything you will struggle.

“They have all got their own jobs but we have all got a say in the final outcome. Nobody is going to go off and OK things as it will all come back to the board.”

Anthony Hampson was chairman for eight years before handing the reins to Goode earlier this month.

“This is the first time I have been on the board in this position so I really don’t know what went on in the past,” Goode said.

“But there were only three directors and a club sponsor so they were under pressure to do all these jobs because there were not enough people to do what was needed.

“Now there are extra people and with me, Tom and Simon all retired we can actually put a bit more time into it and hopefully that will benefit us.

“For instance Simon has got time to go through the finances so he can cherry-pick what needs to be looked at and what doesn’t.

“Regarding merchandise he is roughly an expert of where to go, how to market it and then we have got a team on matchdays that will have someone to go to whenever they need anything.

“Tom will be making sure the teams are happy. If there are any issues Tom will hopefully be able to sort it out. If not, he can call upon the rest of the board.”

Goode said he would also look at a number of fundraising initiatives along with Phil Williamson who manages the club’s Gold Bond scheme.

“We have got an idea which I can’t comment on,” Goode said.

“It is being talked about and if that comes off it could bring some money into the club.”

Goode is also set to appoint a company secretary in the coming days while the search for more volunteers continues.

“We are still looking for volunteers on matchdays,” Goode added.

“If there is anybody out there who wants to get involved come and speak to me or any other director.

“At the end of the year you could save the club a few thousand pounds.”
