DANIELLE Hopkins starred as Worcester Athletic Club prospects headed to the Midlands U15/U17 Track and Field Championships in Nuneaton.

Heptathlete Hopkins, whose lead coach is Deirdre Elmhirst, became Midlands champion in the girls’ under 17s high jump with a leap of 1.68 metres.

She also won silver medals in the shot putt with 11.22m and triple jump with 11.02m after training with coaches Quentin Elmhirst and Mike Bennett respectively.

All three performances were just below her personal bests.

Two under 15s athletes from Worcester also came home with medals.

Callum Brassington-Meehan, coached by Roger Turner, won silver in the boys’ 100m with a PB of 11.65 seconds and Poppy Elton, coached by Geoff Aston, claimed bronze in the girls’ 800m in two minutes 27.94 seconds.

For the girls’ under 17s, Deanna Clarke, coached by Richard White, finished fourth in the 300m hurdles final in 47.16.

Clarke also took part in the 300m where she ran 44.06 in the final.

Also competing in the 300m was Katie Harris, coached by Bennett, who did 45.39.

Harris also ran 13.91 in the 100m race.

Sarah-Jane Ollis, coached by Bennett, competed in both the 100m and 200m, reaching the final in the former and clocking 13.22.

Heptathlete Hannah Sahota was sixth in the long jump with 4.77m.

She qualified for the 80m hurdles final in 12.60 before finishing fifth after delays while the wind gauge was fixed and then for a false start and disqualification for another competitor.

Andrew Jay was the only Worcester under 17s boy who competed and he was fourth in the high jump.

Lottie Bentley raced the girls’ under 15s 100m in 13.65.

In the same age-group, Beth Harris ran a PB of 15.88 in the 75m hurdles.

Under 15s combined events athletes Amber Hopkins and Maya Stewart tackled the same four events.

Amber Hopkins gained PBs in the long jump in 4.58m and shot putt in 8.11m for fourth place.

Stewart threw 7.82m in the shot putt to finish sixth.

Amber Hopkins and Stewart both did well in the high jump, reaching heights of 1.40m and 1.35m respectively.

The two girls also competed in the 75m hurdles but the wind made conditions difficult for fast times or clean racing although they gained good experience against event specialists.
