FORMER Worcester University student Matthew Hudson-Smith won silver in the 400m final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Hudson-Smith, who studied Physical Education and Sports Coaching at Worcester, was pipped to gold by Jamaica's Antonio Watson by an agonising 0.09 seconds.

The 28-year-old Briton led the race until the closing 30m before Watson's strong finish saw him claim the gold medal.

Hudson-Smith had already made waves at the championships, setting a new European record for the 400m in the semi-finals.

But he refused to be content with second-place and admitted afterwards that he would be going for gold when the 2024 Paris Olympics rolls around.

"I came here looking for gold," said Hudson-Smith, whose next major target is the 2024 Olympics in Paris," he said afterward to BBC Sport.

"You are never satisfied, you're always going to want more. I'm grateful but I know there's more.

"Next year, we've got big plans. I've just got to stay healthy. That's the moral of my story in my career but we're getting there.

"I got a bronze last year, I got a silver this year - so next time, gold."

Silver for Hudson-Smith might not have been what he was after this year, but it is another step in the right direction following some horrendous injuries.

He suffered Achilles tendonitis earlier this year and he had to be helped off the track in a wheelchair at the July London Diamond League meeting.

But now the Brit has his sights set on the Olympic Games next year and he goes into that as a big medal favourite. But can he make it gold? We shall have to wait and see.
