Former Burton striker among Lane trialists

WORCESTER City have handed a trial to former Burton Albion striker Jake Edwards.

Edwards, released by the Pirelli Stadium outfit at the end of last season, has been training with City and could feature in the first pre-season friendly against a Cheltenham Town XI on Saturday.

The 32-year-old, who has also had spells with Tamworth, Exeter City and Yeovil Town, scored four goals in 23 appearances for Nigel Clough’s side after joining Burton for free in May 2007.

He is one of several players invited for pre-season training by boss Richard Dryden, along with former Tamworth and Evesham striker Anthony Robinson and defender Ollie Barnes. Robinson, 28, began his career with Kidderminster Harriers but spent time with 10 other clubs before joining the Robins three years ago.

His last club was British Gas Business Division One Midlands side Barton Rovers.

Barnes is a 19-year-old left-footed centre-half who is out of contract following a season in the Blue Square Premier with Salisbury, making nine starts and scoring one goal as they finished 12th.

The trio will train with the St George’s Lane club this week ahead of the game with Cheltenham and could all figure in a possible squad of 22.

Dryden wants to look at as many players as he can in the next few weeks and is likely to give most a half each against the League One side.

He said: “I still need 22 players for the Saturday game to have a look at.

“In the first game of pre-season, 45 minutes is more than enough for anybody, no matter how fit you are.”
