Foreign students are bowled over

STUDENTS from across the world are learning the art of bowls with help from a Worcester club.

Groups visiting this country are being coached in the summer sport as part of their tour of the Faithful City.

Around 40 American students and 36 from Spain have already been schooled in the game by coaches from the Consortium of Cripplegate Bowlers.

The latest visit saw 40 Italian and 40 American youngsters aged 12 to 15 spend an afternoon at Cripplegate Park.

Pat Stokes, secretary of the Consortium of Cripplegate Bowlers, said: “We have one coach per rink who shows them the rudiments of bowling and then we try to have fun games for them to keep them interested.”

The link has been forged with the Cripplegate group to promote the sport and show that large parties can hire the rinks.

Stokes added: “A lot of people in this city think that it’s private. They don’t realise it’s a public park with public bowling greens.”

The Consortium of Cripplegate Bowlers is made up of seven bowling clubs.

They are Powick, Worcester Brotherhood, County Ground, Grosvenor, Worcester Ladies, Cripplegate Ladies and Sons of Rest.
