STOURPORT Swifts have the players to make an impact on British Gas Business Division One Midlands, according to manager Neil Hunt.

The Walshes Meadow club go into Saturday’s home match against Romulus (3pm) with just nine points from eight games and are only five points above bottom side Malvern Town.

However, Swifts gave a good showing in their FA Trophy first qualifying round tie against Premier Divison Yate Town, despite losing the replay 3-1 after holding the Bristol club 1-1 last Saturday.

Hunt has drafted in fresh blood with former Worcester City midfielder Chris Cornes joining the likes of centre-half Andy Jones, striker Duane Darby and midfielder Mark Benbow, who have all had spells with Bromsgrove Rovers.

The manager now wants to see his team defeat Romulus and start moving up the table towards the play-off positions.

He said: “With the players we have here, we should be competing in the top half of the table.

“It’s up to me to pick the right team but, to be honest, it’s up to my players to do the job because they’re good enough.

“I thought we played well over the two games against Yate. We were excellent on Saturday and could have scored more than once.

“In the replay, we could have been luckier which is something we have lacked at times this season.”

Chairman Chris Reynolds added: “The team is just about starting to click.”

Defender Steve Towers is unlikely to feature against Romulus but Adam Robinson’s suspension, following two yellow cards at Yate, has not yet come into force.

Meanwhile, Malvern Town are without a game this weekend.
