Champion Johnston hits ace in marathon

PERDISWELL Park Golf Club captain Nathan Johnston enjoyed a memorable week at the city course.

Johnston was crowned club champion after claiming a seven-stroke victory in the prestigious annual competition.

The on-song golfer fired a gross 70 to hoist the trophy ahead of second-placed Steve Kupfer (77).

However, his championship-winning achievement was then overshadowed by a mammoth charity challenge.

Alongside seven other Perdiswell members, Johnston took to the course at 4.30am in a bid to play four rounds of golf in one day to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The format for the day was full handicap stableford with two scores to count on every hole.

Not only did the intrepid eight achieve their goal — they finished the fourth round at 9.45pm — but Johnston even managed to claim a hole-in-one on the eighth hole.

He said: “We have raised a ballpark figure of £1,200 — it was a great effort from everyone.

“Thanks must also go to Cyrill Misters, who drove around the course all day in a golf buggy providing us with cold drinks.

“He managed to get donations from dog-walkers and other golfers, whom we would also like to thank.”

Meanwhile, on club championship day, Jane Nicklin claimed the ladies’ title with a gross score of 85.

The Roy Turner Trophy — awarded to the lowest nett score achieved on championship day — was won by Roger Richardson with a score of 63.

Six players carded nett 64s but, after a countback, junior member Jamie Smith was awarded second spot and David Hollis third.

The mid-week monthly medal for June attracted a field of 31 players with Ed Nicklin coming out on top with a creditable score of gross 80, nett 60. The next two places went to Mick Huggins and Clive Brown on countback after both finished on nett 64.

The annual Founders’ Cup saw Division One winner Ashley Watkins bag the silverware with a gross score of 81, nett 62.

Tom Jenkins, the Division One runner-up, was second overall two strokes behind.

The Division Two prizes went to Mike Williams (nett 69) and Collis Fisher (nett 71). The lowest gross score of the day was recorded by Steve Kupfer (79).

The seniors’ side suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against Wyre Forest Golf Club as just one pairing managed to half their match.

They also narrowly lost their contest at Sherdons Golf Club 3½-2½.

Ted Holmes and Tom Saint were victorious in the club’s greensomes competition with a fine nett 58. In second place were Mick Boylan and John Griffiths (nett 61) ahead of Mike Williams and John Rudge (nett 72).

Four players recorded nett scores of 65 in round four of the 18-hole summer league for the President’s Trophy After countback, first place was awarded to Tony Porter ahead of Holmes. Clive Brown (nett 68) was third.

In the nine-hole round — the President’s Cup — Gordon Maycroft took the honours with a gross 42, nett 35.

Ray Day took second spot with nett 37, one stroke better than Bill Morris.
