Old Elizabethans secured an important six-wicket win in their Birmingham League Division Two at Sutton Coldfield, who started the game bottom of the table.
Captain Simon Macey won the toss and put his opponents in to bat on a damp looking wicket.
Opening bowlers Denovan Ekstraal (1-8) and Tariq Jamil (1-19) kept the runs down to 27 off the first 12 overs and dismissed Sutton Coldfield’s captain M Guest for three. Former England and Worcestershire left-arm spinner Richard Illingworth (4-15) then took a further two wickets off his first over with only 37 on the scoreboard, resulting in the loss of Sutton Coldfield’s top order.
He then bowled in tandem with Ollie Griffiths (4-23) to steadily eliminate the opposition.
Wicketkeeper Jamie Boyle had a superb game taking four catches as the home team were dismissed for just 72 off 40 overs.
In reply, Old Elizabethan’s had a slow start losing Macey with only 10 on the scoreboard.
He was swiftly followed by Matthew Day who was caught and Denovan Ekstraal trapped leg before both without scoring.
At this point there were only 25 runs on the board and a period of consolidation was needed as is often the case when chasing low targets.
However, Jamie Boyle (41 not out) dug in and with consistent running and, after the dismissal of Phil Slade (eight), a partnership with James Bull (15 not out) they put the final 33 runs on to secure a victory off just 29.5 overs.
OEs now start the second half of their season with a fixture against Tamworth at the Memorial Ground on Saturday where they will look to build on two consecutive victories.
