HEREFORDSHIRE were left chasing a mammoth target after Cheshire amassed 454-9 at Nantwich in the Minor Counties Championship.
On a glorious, sunny day, Cheshire won the toss and elected to bat before making a steady start.
Rick Moore was out for 23, caught and bowled by debutant Faisal Shahid with the score on 53.
Warren Goodwin and Chris Tipper added another half-century partnership but a double strike just before lunch by Shahid brought Herefordshire back into the match.
Goodwin was well caught by Patel at mid on for 48 and just four balls later he pinned the dangerous Spendlove lbw for 0.
Cheshire went into lunch on 111-3 with Shahid returning figures of 3-33.
Tipper and Duffy added a further 44 before the latter was given out caught behind by Powell off Wedge for 12.
Cheshire captain Andrew Hall was next to go, bowled by Griffiths for 13 but Tipper motored to his maiden championship century for Cheshire with successive fours off Griffiths. In 128 balls, he hit 19 fours.
A partnership of 65 in 27 minutes between Tipper and Nathan Dumelow was broken when Dumelow was caught at long leg by James Shackleton off Boroughs for 17.
Whittaker soon followed, bowled by Boroughs for 2 as Cheshire went into tea at 308-7 with Shahid taking 3-73, Boroughs 2-52, Wedge 1-50 and Griffiths 1-53.
Herefordshire had to wait until the 89th over for their next wicket, that of Tipper for 219, the highest score by a Cheshire batsman in the championship.
He was caught at long leg off Shackleton to give him his first championship wicket.
The partnership of 153 between Tipper and Matt Dawson was a record for the eighth wicket against Herefordshire in championship cricket.
Dan Berry was run out in the next over before Cheshire declared on a massive 454-9. Herefordshire were left to negotiate 17 overs before close of play and had reached 63-1 with Ben Stebbings the only casualty out for 16.
