ON a day when thunderstorms were an ever-present threat, RGS Worcester and Alice Ottley School (RGSAO) beat Ellowes College in the final of the Bunbury Cup under 12s knock-out competition by 22 runs.
The Dudley school arrived at the final having defeated Hanley Castle High School, Christopher Whitehead and Nunnery Wood, while the Worcester team had seen off the challenges of Ridgeway Middle School, King’s Worcester and Haybridge High.
A heavy shower prompted Ellowes to choose to bowl first on winning the toss and the opening bowlers made life difficult for the batsmen.
However, it was the spin of James Baker (3-12) that eventually broke through. Jack Taylor held firm, though, and went on to score a fine 50.
What looked as if it was going to be a reasonable total was then translated into a competitive one by some powerful hitting from Alex Hills (19) and Lewis Bradley (18 not out). The innings closed on 121-5 off the allotted 20 overs.
The Ellowes reply started steadily, but the tight RGSAO fielding always kept the pressure on the batsmen.
The decisive blows were struck when county under 12 players Dan Durman (19) and Oliver Westbury (nine) were both run out by alert fielding.
George Forsyth (34) battled on and there was a late flourish from Baker (19no), but the target proved ultimately to be out of reach as Ellowes ended on 99-3 to hand RGSAO a 22-run victory.
