WORCESTER Wolves have signed 21-year-old 6ft 2ins Lithuanian rising star Evaldas Zabas.

Zabas was last year considered the second best point guard in Canada just behind Devoe Joseph.

Wolves head coach Chuck Evans said: “Evaldas is a young player with potential. “When given court time last season for a league one team in Germany, he showed his ability.

“I wanted a more experienced player at the guard position but the players recruited decided to play elsewhere.

“I appreciated Evaldas being persistent this summer by staying in contact. He just wants to play and help the team win. His determination, along with his talent, will be a welcome addition to the Wolves.”

As a youngster growing up in Lithuania, Zabas was passionate about sports and in 2003 he and his family decided they wanted Canada to be their new home. They moved to Toronto and Zabas gained an academic bursary for St Michael’s College.

At only 16 years old, Zabas’ potential on the basketball court was soon spotted and, despite being a junior, he was selected for the senior squad.

He averaged 18 points and six assists in his first season. “He’s a very good shooter and brings an intensity to the game that Canadian kids really don’t have,” said a St Michael’s spokesman.

“Evaldas is very quick with the ball, anticipates well and has surprised a lot of people.”

In the European Under 20 tournament last year, Lith-uania finished second with Zabas proving his value to the team after he returned to his homeland and showed up at the preparation camp.
