WORCESTER Wanderers maintained their 100 per cent start to the Midlands Two West (South) season with a hard-fought 34-17 victory at Bedworth.

The home side were promoted alongside Wanderers and, following two tight league encounters last term, the Worcester outfit expected more of the same this time around.

It was a physical contest with both sides reverting to a kicking game to gain territory, but that led to a scrappy affair with Wanderers’ lack of cohesion not allowing them to take advantage of their territorial edge.

A deft kick into space by busy scrum-half Tim Fincher was chased by Tom Mitchell, who was rewarded by taking a great catch to score an excellent try. Greg Fincher added the conversion.

From the re-start, Wanderers lost the ball in contact and Bedworth swept up field to score a converted try under the visitors’ posts.

Wanderers went back on the attack and Greg Fincher stepped up to knock over a simple penalty.

In the dying seconds of the first-half, Bedworth were awarded a penalty which was converted to leave the half-time score at 10-10.

The second-half began with Wanderers applying pressure to the Bedworth set-piece.

Ned Anderson then scored a fine individual try, gliding through the Bedworth defence to give Greg Fincher a simple conversion.

Two more tries — one from Sam Carter, converted by Fincher, and another from Chris Jenkinson — consigned Bedworth to defeat.

However, the hosts continued to press and scored a converted try, before Mitchell finished the scoring with his second try of the day.

Fincher narrowly missed the conversion.
