WORCESTER Wanderers’ fine start to the Midlands Two West (South) season continued with a 19-3 victory at Berkswell and Balsall.

From the kick-off, Berkswell attacked the loose ball and earned a scrum close to the Wanderers’ line.

However, solid defence led to a turnover and a relieving kick.

The B’s were enjoying territorial advantage, but could not find a way through Wanderers’ defence.

A penalty was awarded for offside at a ruck and the home full-back stepped up to convert from in front of the posts.

From a scrum, Jake Saddington broke blind and fed Luke Denton, who popped the ball over the top of the on-rushing defence. Chasing hard, Denton was adjudged to have knocked the ball on over the line.

The resulting scrum saw the Wanderers’ pack claim a strike against the head and James Price took full advantage to glide over to the right of the posts. Greg Fincher added the conversion.

Wanderers attacked from the re-start and a penalty outside the hosts’ 22 was taken quickly by Lee Watson, who off-loaded to the supporting Chris Griffiths only for play to be called back, when a try looked certain, for the B’s not being 10 metres.

The Sixways side kicked to the corner and, from the line-out, drove for the line. Rob Green peeled off and charged forward only to be held up.

The remainder of the half saw a series of scrums, defended manfully by the seven-man Wanderers pack due to the sin-binning of Saddington.

In the last minute of the half, the home inside-centre was also binned and Fincher despatched the ball to touch to end a frenetic first-half.

After the break, Fincher hit the post from a penalty but, following several phases, full-back Paul Burton passed to hooker Simon James, who crashed over in the corner. Fincher narrowly missed the conversion.

Each side had another player sent to the bin before Chris Jenkinson took a quick line-out throw to James, who touched down for his second and Wanderers’ third try. Price converted.
