Worcester City 4 Weston-super-Mare 1

NEW signing Marc McGregor was among the scorers as Worcester City thrashed Weston-super-Mare in front of their largest St George’s Lane league gate of the season.

McGregor rose to head a debut goal from Rob Davies’ 17th minute corner to put the rampant hosts ahead and Craig Wilding doubled the advantage with a volley from the edge of the area five minutes later.

Rob Elvins added a third with a 51st minute breakaway effort and Wayne Daniel nodded home the fourth from Graham Ward’s 67th minute free-kick to send the 823 fans home happy.

Despite conceding a late Ben Joyce goal, City dominated throughout and with better finishing could have won by more as they avenged September’s defeat in Somerset.

Referee Mark Russell also showed eight yellow cards, four to each side, with City’s Kevin Spencer, Mark Clyde, Elvins and McGregor, replaced by Marco Adaggio on 65 minutes, all booked.

McGregor, signed from Weston last week, slotted straight into the team in place of Adaggio and looked as if he had been there all season. He got stuck into his former employers and gave a battling performance that is sure to endear him to City fans.

Clyde skippered the side after Tom Kemp failed a late fitness test but Davies only lasted 32 minutes after picking up an injury and he was replaced by Ward.

City imposed themselves from the off and had chances to break the deadlock before they took the lead. Elvins’ header from a Davies free-kick was deflected for a corner and the latter’s delivery was met by the head of McGregor.

Wilding then swept home his fourth goal of the season to increase Worces-ter’s lead and put them in control.

The hosts rode their luck when keeper Ben Hinchliffe inexplicably picked up Daniel’s back-pass before half-time and Dave Gilroy's point-blank blast was blocked by one of many blue and white bodies on the line.

City moved further ahead after the break as Elvins found himself in the clear, jinked his way past a couple of challenges and fired a deflected shot past keeper Kevin Sawyer.

Ben Wells lobbed the ball over Hinchliffe and wide of the far post as Weston sought an unlikely way back but normal service was soon resumed.

Man-mountain Daniel headed City’s fourth goal and Clyde almost got in on the act when he blasted inches over .

Joyce's 77th minute consolation was met by silence around the Lane and Elvins should have made it five in the final minute but fell over the ball on the line with the goal at his mercy.

City: Hinchliffe 6, Spencer 6, Khan 7, Wilding 7, Daniel 8*, Clyde 8, Davies (Ward 32, 8) 7, Birley 7, McGregor (Adaggio 65) 8, Elvins 7, Dinsmore (Carter 75) 7. Sub not used: Walker.

After last nights performance I feel the green shoots are starting to grow with a few weeds.
McGregor looks to be a good signing. I would release Elvins sraightaway got to be one of the worst signings the Club has made for a very long time. His goal last night was extremely fortunate, he contributes next to nothing, does not hold ball up, very rarely wins any tackles. Not required must GO. Put Wilding up front with money saved get a good midfielder to go with Birley. The Keeper also is a concern, he fails to deal with crosses puts defence on edge does not know when to come or stay. Rash decision making like last night, headed ball out and very lucky not to concide goal I was level with incident he could have stood his ground on edge of area and caught ball. Our Back Division is good, get midfielder, release Elvins and we are on the move. Well done Richard and Carl doing a difficult job in difficult circumstances

I can`t get to evening games because of work, so it seems like I missed a good one.
The crowd of 823 is very heartening and if it can be repeated a few times - or if the team can perform at this level consistently, maybe increased - City`s cashflow problems would be eased considerably.
I agree with Dandey - one more decent midfielder would improve things even further.
I`m not sure about Elvins - at times he looks really good then at crucial times he looks an absolute duffer - maybe he`s trying too hard and needs to relax a bit.
I think I would prefer to see Walker and Dinsmore perhaps sent out on loan to free up some money for a new midfielder - I don`t think either of them are really good enough for this league.
But I`m looking forward to the next Saturday game more than I have for a long time.
