Top-scorer departs for league rivals

KIDDERMINSTER Harriers boss Mark Yates had a busy afternoon on the final day of the emergency loan window.

Yates saw star striker Matthew Barnes-Homer join Luton Town for what Yates describes as “a substantial amount of money”.

But the Kidderminster manager brought in strikers Damian Spencer from Kettering and Ryan Charles from Luton on loan.

Barnes-Homer signed a two-year deal with Harriers in the summer but his displays have attracted attention and today he signed for Luton on loan with a view to a permanent five-figure move in January.

“It is sad to see Matthew leave but it was an offer too good to turn down, both for us and for Matthew,” Yates said.

“But I’m really pleased to get two strikers in on the back of it. I had hoped to bring in an attacking midfielder but he went elsewhere.

“At 5pm today, I have to say I was a very happy man. Both us and Matthew would have liked him to go on to a Football League club, but they just couldn’t put the money up that we have got for him.

“The chairman (Barry Norgrove) was a little afraid of the reaction from letting Matthew go but I can assure everyone that this is a very good piece of business for the football club.”

Charles, a 20-year-old forward, scored the winner for Luton in the 2-1 victory when they clashed with Harriers last month and joins until January.

Former Cheltenham Town powerhouse forward Spencer, 28, is also at Aggborough until the new year.

Both players go straight into the squad for Saturday’s Blue Square Premier home match against AFC Wimbledon (3pm).

Harriers have become the team to beat in the last month after seeing off leaders Oxford United 3-1 at Aggborough, securing a 2-0 victory at high-flying Kettering and holding Wrexham to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday.

Winger Kyle Hadley is battling to be fit after picking up a groin strain, while midfielder John Finnigan is back training after groin trouble.

Full-back Lee Baker is available again after a three-match ban and came off the bench at Wrexham.
