TERRY Jenkins has one simple aim at this year’s Ladbrokes.com World Championships and that is to get past the first round.

The Bull has made an early exit from the Alexandra Palace in the last two years, crashing out to Kirk Shepherd in 2008 and then Dennis Smith 12 months later.

But the Ledbury world number six knows he has a tough first round enounter when he tackles Australian Paul Nicholson tonight.

“The only thing I’m thinking about is getting through the first round — nothing else is crossing my mind at the moment,” Jenkins said.

“It is going to be a tough match against Paul but if I can beat him then maybe I can have a good run.”

Having spent the last few weeks in Ireland performing in exhibition matches, Jenkins returned to the practice board over the weekend.

The 46-year-old linked up with Andy Smith, who faces Darin Young in the opening round, to prepare for the World Championship.

“I have played seven exhibitions in Ireland and have been using that as my main practice for the World Championships,” the Bull said.

But, should the Bull and Smith succeed in their first-round clashes, then the two friends will go head-to-head a week tomorrow.

While Jenkins has not been at the practice board, the Ledbury ace says he is trying to stay relaxed. He said: “You can’t treat the World Championships any different from any other tournament.

“I have been a bit up-and-down in the Players’ Championships but, if I’m honest, I get bored with those. I know they are important for your rankings but it is a bit like playing in the local leagues.

“But, when it comes to the televised events, I tend to do OK and that can be better than winning five or six of the players’ events.”

While Jenkins has crashed out of the World Championships in the first round for the last two years, he is joint sixth favourite to lift the title.

The price of 40-1 is long with reigning champion Phil Taylor odd-ons at 4-11.
