THREE Worcestershire teenagers have been praised for winning places at a national camp for highly-talented young athletes.

Canoeists Matthew Train, of Pershore, Jonny Tye, of King’s School Worcester, and rower Yasmin Tredell, a pupil at Prince Henry’s High School, Evesham, will be among 130 aspiring Olympians and Paralympians.

They are attending the fourth National Talent Orientation Camp run by the Youth Sport Trust from January 6 until 9.

Olympic canoeing champion Tim Brabants and three-time Olympic silver medallist rower Katherine Grainger hailed the camp at Loughborough University as an important stepping stone for Britain’s future talent.

The four-day camp blends cross-sport training sessions and competition with motivational workshops.

Brabants said: “As a professional athlete, one of the hardest things is balancing the demands of your sport with other factors, such as work and family commitments.

“For young people, the pressure can be even greater if you consider education, homework, socialising with friends and family life.

“The Youth Sport Trust National Talent Orientation Camp supports the young athletes attending and their teachers to ensure they can work together and create an environment which allows them to develop both physically and mentally.

“I wish Matthew and Jonny every success and congratulate them for being selected.”

Grainger said: “Getting selected for the Youth Sport Trust National Talent Orientation Camp is a real achievement and something Yasmin can be proud of.

“One of the key aims of the camp is to offer the young people a window into the world of performance sport, exploring the expectations and demands, and allow them time to reflect on their own talent and ability.

“I wish Yasmin and all the young athletes attending every success.”
