BALLOT: Can England win the World Cup without David Beckham?

IT'S all doom and gloom on the football pitch after news that England superman David Beckham appears to be out of the World Cup.

It's thought the country's most capped player tore his Achilles tendon in AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo yesterday, making it almost certain that he'll miss the tournament, the finals for which take place in South Africa from June.

The hopes of the nation have rested on the 34-year-old midfielder's shoulders for the past three World Cups, but that now looks like it could all be over.

Back in November we asked if you thought the national squad could win in South Africa and the results were interesting.

So given the latest major development we'd like to know how your views have changed - if at all.

After Beckham's unfortunate injury can we still do it? Could we anyway?

Will on-form Wayne Rooney pull it out of the bag?

...or will England be also-rans again?

Please let us know your thoughts in the comment box below and take a moment to vote in our poll.

It's a shame. He'd have been a very useful impact player. Always handy to have him to bring on for the last 20-30 mins if we need a goal....... who can we rely on now? He'd also have been good to have around the squad/dressing room, etc because of his experience, especially since the Terry debacle that seems to have rocked the boat a bit.... Becks could've been a steadying influence. But there we go, not to be, and i wouldn't be surprised if one or two more big names fall by the wayside yet, as always tends to happen before a world cup! 2 - 3 months before a world cup is the only time you hear about 'metatarsals' and there's still a lot of football to be played between now and June!

Although it looks like Beckham won't be playing he could still be with the team in a supportive role. His wealth of experience and just being present with them could help a lot especially with younger players. As long as we don't loose any other key players before June we may have a decent chance.

Agree with both of the above comments - it's important for him to be there even if it's just on the bench and in the dressing room. His experience and leadership are invaluable.

can we have another option added to the ballot - don't know and don't care?

He will still go in some capacity no doubt about that. I doubt he would have played many games if he was fit as we have Lennon, Walcott who have bags of pace down both flanks, and also Joe Cole if hes match fit.
I would still take him though.
