Ruddock sees big area to improve

MIKE Ruddock was disappointed to see Warriors ‘A’ out-smarted at the breakdown by youthful Northampton Wanderers in the ‘A’ League Northern Conference at Sixways.

Despite Worcester fielding a strong side due to their two-week lack of a competitive fixture, Wanderers claimed a 25-23 success.

Warriors director of rugby Ruddock insisted his side played all the rugby but could not compete at the breakdown, turning over possession on a regular basis, as well as losing Marcel Garvey to a late yellow card.

He said: “In fairness to Northampton, they dug in, gave us a lesson in the contact area and turned us over a lot.

“We have the ability to play good rugby but that doesn’t matter if we don’t win the contest in the tackle area.”

“It was a good lesson to remind us how important that area will be in our next league game against Leicester.

“We have the ability to play good rugby but that doesn’t matter if we don’t win the contest in the tackle area.

“It was good to see Rico Gear get a try and a confidence boost and it was the same with Netani Talei. It is good that he is back in action and Netani looked confident with his shoulder.”

Ruddock’s hopes of setting up a training ground match with Moseley or Coventry have been scuppered by the two sides’ involvement in the Championship’s relegation play-offs.

He added: “We could not get a game against Moseley or Coventry arranged because of the play-offs. They both have injury problems and could not justify an extra contact session against a Guinness Premiership side.”

I would suggest that Mike Ruddock attend spec savers or at least turn up to a game or 2. How he believes we played all the rugby i fail to understand, the only danger on that pitch from worcester was injecting Garvey with the apathy witnessed from several other players.
We didnt win the breakdown because we were not there, the line breaks, apart from the tries, were the domain of the Northampton SCHOOLBOYS. I watched Gear avoid taking a tackle, he was so close i saw the fear in his eyes. We should be very clear on the fact that this WAS NOT an "A" team outing for us, there were several internationals and 75% of our team would be considered for a first team start.
From the stands i can see that we have talent but the resounding cries are that the coaching requires direction, and one that is tottally in another direction, the players need to speed up the chase at the kick moving the point of contact further up the pitch forcing errors and possibly taking advantage of fumbled ball. The backs are far too deep in attack 5 meters not 15 when we are at the try line. Discipline, we lose too many matches on discipline. Breakdown COMMIT COMMIT COMMIT. Also at the breakdown do not transmit the move and certainly take, step, pass is not fast ball, Matt jones please note you were not that good here.
we do not need a new number 9 we need to develop and change our game plan.
And finally if i were the boss, hands on hips would envoke a £50 fine, the first part of ANY defeat is in the mind, look defeated and the opponent gains first blood.
