WORCESTER Wanderers claimed their first ever victory in the English Colts Plate final at Bedford's Goldington Road, seeing off Roch-ford Hundred 29-3.

After five rounds of competition the Sixways team lifted the trophy, thanks to some impressive attacking play and some staunch defending which led to them running in four tries.

Rochford, however, were the team to go in front first, dominating the game in the opening 20 minutes while Worcester defended furiously. Rochford's reward was a penalty, converted by Danny Cleare.

Despite Worcester then losing Jake Abbott to the sin-bin they soon settled into the game to draw level, thanks to a Sean Walker penalty.

Still a man down, Worcester managed to continue to apply the pressure and their reward was a try just before the break courtesy of An-drew Tew.

Leading 8-3 after the restart and this time with the slope and the wind working to their advantage, a second try soon came Worcester's way.

Three minutes into the new half it was Luke Ward who was on the spot to take the spoils. Matt Williams stroked over the conversion for a 15-3 lead.

Abbott then stretched Worcester's lead to a comfortable 22-3 with his side's third try, before inside-centre Tim Streather was set up for a converted effort after some good scrummaging work to make the final score 29-3.

Head coach Stuart James said: "Despite what the scoreline might suggest this was a very hard game.

"Rochford were more than competitive in the first 25 minutes but thanks to some strong defending we held them out.

"The game turned for us after the break as we had the advantage of the wind and the slope and that was what made the difference.

"Rochford, however, never gave up and that was what made it a great game."
