WORCESTER City overcame a handicap of 1½ points to defeat Greenlands in the Worcestershire Chess League’s Wheatley Memorial Cup.

On board four, Jim Keene obtained a massive protected passed central pawn and crashed through against Richard Collett.

This result was followed by Peter Kitson’s win on board one against Lawrence Wheatley.

On board three, Andrew Wiggins was a solid pawn up but, down to his last five minutes, blundered to allow Ray Collett to snatch back a pawn more than equalising the position.

Worcester’s captain, anticipating further success, offered Wiggins a draw and it was immediately accepted.

Ed Osbourn then demonstrated fine technique to win a king and pawn ending against Brian Allsop, while Andrew Farthing defeated Ian Truscott.

Worcester will meet either Hagley or Kidderminster in the final.
