WORCESTERSHIRE pace bowlers Gareth Andrew and Chris Whelan are set to miss tomorrow’s LV= County Championship Division Two trip to Surrey.

The pair picked up injuries during the 250-run victory over Leeds/Bradford MCCU last week and director of cricket Steve Rhodes has rated them as doubtful for the match at Whitgift School in South Croydon.

Andrew dislocated a bowling finger on his right hand on the second morning of the three-day match and requir-ed hospital treatment.

Whelan, however, pulled up mid-over on the final day at Kidderminster with a hamstring strain.

The duo missed yesterday’s 40-over inter-squad practice match at New Road but Rhodes is hopeful they could be in the shake-up for the Clydesdale Bank 40 opener with Sussex Sharks on Sunday.

“They are both doubtful for tomorrow,” Rhodes said. “We had a practice match between ourselves and they didn’t play.”

With Andrew and Whelan set to miss out, Jack Shantry is likely to be rewarded for his 12-wicket haul in the Leeds/Bradford match.

The left-arm swing bowler missed the opening match of the season when Worcester-shire beat Middlesex by 111 runs.

But a career-best 12-65 against the students means he is likely to join Matt Mason, Alan Richardson and Richard Jones in a four-pronged seam attack.

“Even without the injuries to Gareth and Chris, Jack had a good chance of playing against Surrey,” the director of cricket added.

The trip to Surrey will see Worcestershire trying to make it three wins in a row as they look to maintain their fine start to the season.

Having gone through the entire campaign last summer without a victory, the first time in 81 years, the New Road club face a team that have yet to win this term.

The Oval side strengthened their team during the close season, bringing in Worcestershire duo Steve Davies and Gareth Batty as well as Rory Hamilton-Brown from Sussex and England seamer Chris Tremlett from Hampshire.

Meanwhile, Rhodes is backing Moeen Ali to come good with the bat after a testing start to the campaign.

The 22-year-old has only faced 40 balls in four innings this term, being dismissed twice without scoring, and has only scored nine runs.

“He’s short of a few runs and with that comes a lack of confidence,” Rhodes said. “But we haven’t lost confidence in Moeen. He is a super player and will come good.

“He is definitely one of our future players — a class act.”
