NOT content with playing rugby alongside Pat Sanderson and taking the wicket of David Leatherdale, Alan Keylock has added our cricketer of the week award to his list of achievements.

The 20-year-old is an all-rounder in more ways than one and as recently as last season was among the academy players at Worcester Warriors, with whom he made two first-team appearances.

But now he is showing he is pretty handy with a cricket ball as well, hitting 89 runs for Birlingham against Tenbury and then throwing in a five-wicket haul for good measure.

"It wasn't the best innings I've had in terms of quality but I've never had a 50 before on a Saturday," he said.

"It took me a while to get going and to start seeing the ball. They brought a spinner on who put the ball in the right places."

Keylock then took 5-36, bowling left-arm spin on a wicket he described as "agricultural" and helping Birlingham to a winning draw.

He said: "The wicket wasn't brilliant. It was just uncertain and a bit agricultural. The bounce was all over the shop. There were some balls that were barely rolling to the wicketkeeper. I was putting it just outside middle and leg at about waist height."

And 24 hours later he added an unbeaten century to help his side ease to victory against Ashton-under-Hill.

But Keylock is relatively new to the sport having made his name as a rugby player.

As a hooker in the academy at Sixways, he had a sudden promotion to the first team when an injury crisis hit and came on as a sub in the Premiership against Leeds and a Powergen Cup tie at Leicester.

"I would have to say I'm better at rugby but at the moment cricket is great fun," he said.

The Hereford-born youngster has since quit Warriors to concentrate on university, which he begins later this year, and will play next season at Stourbridge.

Keylock gave glimpses of his cricketing prowess when he turned out for Birlingham in a fundraiser against an invitational XI and claimed the wickets of Leatherdale, Stuart Lampitt and Duncan Catterall.

His form with the ball this week may not have come as a shock but he is still pleasantly surprised to be getting runs from his batting position at number four.

"I wouldn't really regard myself as a batsman," he said. "The first time I played for the first team was against Himbleton. I had 40 and bowled pretty well.

"Then last week I had 38. I've had centuries on Sunday before. It was great fun to score runs on Saturday."

Keylock wins a £30 voucher for the Fearnley Factory shop in Worcester.
