SHELSLEY Walsh returned to action after the hard winter with a stunning display from British number two Trevor Willis, who won both Avon/BMTR run-offs in his OMS-Powertec racing car.

Record times were not in evidence as the cold weather and overnight downpours kept track speeds down, especially on Saturday morning.

Local drivers did not feature heavily in the class results, but reigning Midland champion Dave Wilson, of Ludlow, continued his dominance of the road-going specialist cars class with a win.

Following Willis home in the two run-offs were UK Changes Midland Championship sponsor Steve Day, who achieved his best-ever result in hill-climbing in the recently-acquired Pilbeam MP97, with fifth in run-off one and second in run-off two. His co-driver Ash Mason (Cheshire) claimed two fourth places, also a best performance.

The late four-time champion Roy Lane’s son-in-law, John Chalmers of Warwick, also gave a best-ever performance with second and third in the two run-offs.

A new feature was a special class called “flat eight” for eight cylinder side-valve cars and this attracted 11 entrants from as far away as Scotland and Dorset.

This class was a hit with enthusiasts who are looking forward to a repeat performance.

Meanwhile, visitors gave the new Stratstone restaurant in the restored courtyard a thumbs-up and the caterers were worked off their feet to keep up with demand.
