HOSTS Evesham Rowing Club won seven out of 47 events at a rain-affected regatta.

Only Saturday’s races could go ahead after heavy rain overnight saw Sunday’s sprint regatta cancelled.

The river Avon rose by nearly a foot, meaning the water was over the landing stage.

Evesham won the junior 18 ‘A’ quad scull coxless, junior 15 ‘A’ four coxed, junior 16 ‘A’ double scull and the women’s junior 18 ‘A’ scull in the morning’s 24 events.

In the afternoon’s action, Evesham won the Evesham Journal Cup in the novice men’s coxed fours final.

They saw off runners-up Monmouth School and seven other crews including last year’s winners Bristol Ariel.

Further Evesham victories came in the intermediate three scull where Edward Surman took the honours by two lengths.

The club also scooped the women’s junior 15 ‘A’ double scull title.

Among the events cancelled on Sunday were the junior 12 ‘A’ scull, women’s masters ‘A’ double scull and women’s intermediate three four coxed.

Evesham also notched up 10 runners-up spots in other events including the intermediate three double scull and masters ‘E’ double scull. There were more than 530 entries from 40 clubs including Bristol, Exeter, Staines, Cheltenham and Bewdley at the prestigious regatta. Upton beat Evesham in the final of the masters ‘E’ double scull.

Other local successes saw RGS Worcester win the women’s intermediate 3 four coxed and the women’s intermediate 3 eight coxed.

The 1,000-metre course went from downstream of the Abbey Road bridge to just short of Workmen Bridge.
