FORMER Worcester City player Ray Woods will return to his old stomping ground for a cup final this weekend.

Woods, who played more than 100 times for City in two stints between 1997 and 2002, is set to turn out for AFC Nunnery Wood Colts Reserves in the Bernard Finnegan Cup final at St George’s Lane on Sunday.

The 44-year-old, a £200,000 signing for Coventry City from Wigan Athletic in 1991, is set to play as a support striker in the contest with AFC West Midlands.

The Worcester and District League final is the latest in a string of successes for the team in their debut campaign.

They are currently top of Division Four and beat VBL Sports 4-1 on penalties to win the Worcester Nursing Minor Cup.

Woods joined the team after meeting boss Andy Twigg during the former’s time as football academy manager at Worcester College of Technology.

Twigg runs Nutz4Sportz and Woods approached him over a deal to supply kit for his Deansway team.

“We got talking. We were looking for players and Ray decided to dust off his boots,” Twigg said.

“He brings experience to the team and a calm head. In the penalty shoot-out, he was a great help to the younger lads.

“He provides that little bit of genius on occasions.

“He’s a very good guy to have around and he can see things that maybe we miss.

“As a club, it’s helped raise our profile.

“We were very much a youth football club and this season is the first time we have embarked on a senior team.”

The team is still looking for new players and anyone interested can contact Twigg on 07988-842551.
