WORCESTER City will not put any pressure on Kevin O’Connor for a decision about his future.

The 24-year-old AFC Telford United central midfielder has been offered a deal by the St George’s Lane club for next season.

However, he is waiting for clarification on his position at the managerless New Bucks Head club, now a rival of City in Blue Square North, before committing.

O’Connor played alongside Mark Clyde at Wolves before a hamstring injury forced him out of the professional game in 2008, a similar situation to the Worcester assistant boss who retired at the top level due to a knee problem.

City manager Carl Heeley wants the player, who also had a spell at Stockport and played for Republic of Ireland Under 21s, to bring his qualities to the team’s challenge in their new division.

It is hoped confirmation of City’s place in Blue Square North for the 2010/11 campaign will prove a selling point.

Heeley said: “We met with Kevin pretty much soon after the season ended.

“He was one of our targets and we have made him an offer but he’s waiting to see what develops at Telford which we fully respect.

“All we can do is make him an offer. We are not going to put him under any pressure, the offer will remain on the table for as long as possible.

“He’s a player we would like to have at the club.”

He added: “Mark and Graham Ward both know him from their days at Wolverhampton.

“He’s a very accomplished midfield player.”
