MORE than 200 crews will descend on the river Severn tomorrow for Worcester Rowing Club’s spring regatta.

Competitors from across the country are set to take part in the annual showpiece, which sees boats race over a 750-metre course from the road bridge in the city to the banks of the rowing club.

The action, which will see men, women and juniors compete in a diverse range of events, starts at 9am with racing continuing until 5.30pm, featuring a race every three minutes.

There is a strong contingent of Worcester crews with entries from the University of Worcester, King’s and Royal Grammar School Worcester.

The host club will also be hoping to win on home water, particularly the women’s novice four and men’s novice eight who are making their racing debuts.

Crews have also entered from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, Cambridge and Nottingham.

Worcester Rowing Club’s regatta secretary Anne O’Connell is looking forward to what promises to be an action-packed event.

“For our club it’s probably the biggest event we run,” she said.

“Planning started about three months ago but most of the work is done in the last couple of weeks.”

She added: “We have got more than 30 entries from the home club and most of them are juniors competing so hopefully there will be some home success.

“Probably more than half of the entries are Worcester-based.”

Spectators are welcome and refreshments will be available at the club.
