BARBOURNE AC matchman Pete Hughes has a record second to none on the club pool at Cotheridge and this was enhanced once again when he comfortably won round two of the summer league on the venue.

Drawn on permanent peg four, Hughes decided to target cruising fish with meat bait which he offered shallow at 12 metres.

By constantly changing to the margins as well as a pre-fed five-metre line, the club star was able to keep in touch with feeding fish, ending with 15 carp for a winning total of 69-8-0.

Consistent Lee Griffiths took the runner-up prize when he too operated shallow on peg 12. Griffiths preferred bread on the hook and was rewarded with fish to four pounds, finishing with a level 41-0-0.

Third-placed Richard Hancocks also relied on the humble bread on peg 28 to take five fish going 31-4-0, while close behind in fourth was Ashley Bosworth, weighing 29-8-0 from peg 24.

This weekend the club visit Wilden pool at Stourport.

Paul Coley narrowly won the Swan AC match held on the ‘High Wall’ section of the canal at Stoke Works when he took 5-11-15 to the scales.

The area is well known for bream but it was only Coley who managed to find any, taking one good sample along with a smaller hybrid on worm and caster which, along with a few squatt- caught small perch and gudgeon, was enough to give him the verdict.

Runner-up was the unstoppable Mick Samson, who offered his hempseed well across the canal in order to net 5-5-12 of roach.

Chris Turner continued his good run on canals with a third-placed 2-10-6 which consisted of a few squatt fish along with five roach on hemp.

Les Sanders was fourth, catching an all-roach net of 2-6-8, initially on breadpunch then a few later on hemp.

Cob House fishery is still producing excellent catches with Scott Jones winning the Saturday open on Wyatt’s pool with a level 91-0-0 of carp.

Jones netted mainly big fish from peg 15 by offering paste bait close into the margins.

Chris Phipps used pellet, again close in on peg 20, for a runner-up weight of 72-6-0. Third was Phil Walters with another pellet and paste weight of 64-11-0 from peg 12.

Members of the Arbo AC visited the BAA section of the canal at Blackpole where Phil Bennett comfortably won by netting an excellent roach of over a pound along with a few small fish when he offered pinkie bait well across the canal for a 2-2-0 total.

Tim Yapp came second with a small fish net, taken in similar style to the winner and going 1-1-0. Dave Hinley finished in third place weighing 0-15-0 from the track to beat consistent Luke Reardon’s 0-13-0 fourth-placed catch.
